A university bar in Wales has been forced to close Coffee replaces beer as drink of choice for cash-strapped students
A university bar in Wales has been forced to close as students swap cider for cappucino as a cheaper option in an era of £9,000 a year tuition fees
A student bar at Aberystwyth University, where Prince Charles once spent a term, has shut due to a lack of patronage from students who have grown up in a Britain more preoccupied with "coffee culture".
Student president Ben Meakin said: "More students are drinking coffee during the day while studying - and fewer are going out late into the night."
The 15,000 students who attend the university were once well known for their love of drinking and a "party hard" mentality, but that has changed with the current undergraduate cohort - who will pay £9,000 in fees.
Mr Meakin added: "This is partly because of the rise in tuition fees and students having to face further financial hardship.
"So the university have chosen to improve the main union building to make it a more appealing living room on campus during the day time

Dance lessons 'at risk' due to Coalition exam reforms
Experts from prestigious bodies such as The Royal Ballet and English National Ballet said there was a “real danger” that the subject will be axed for 11- to 16-year-olds as part of a shake-up of GCSEs.
In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, it was claimed that dance was dying out despite “an unprecedented level” of enthusiasm for the discipline among young people.
The comments were made after the Government unveiled plans to scrap GCSEs in favour of new qualifications dubbed English Baccalaureate Certificates.
Courses will be introduced in English, maths, science, foreign languages, history and geography. Ministers also want to overhaul exam league tables to measure school performance in the six subject areas.
But the new qualifications – covering England – will fail to cover other disciplines such as art, drama, dance, music, religious studies, design and technology and physical education.
Aluu 4 killings: Prof Soyinka said his Is The Height Of Man Inhumanity To Man
Professor Soyinka, who spoke on the ALUU 4 killings on thursday, in Port Harcourt, and at the public presentation of Port Harcourt as UNESCO World Book capital for 2014, said it was so painful watching the video clips of how the students were beaten, paraded like he-goats, beaten to coma and later burnt to death
Professor Soyinka said Boko Haram and other allied movements that wage war against civility and enlightenment were fighting against humanity in the Country.
he also said said i believe that if we surrender to these banal forces in our society, we would cease to be human beings because we succumb completely to fear and it is the same message we must take to those in this nation, who believe that books are wrong.
He said that he don’t care whether they call themselves the final defenders of the pure road and the ultimate salvation or call themselves Boko Haram.
Boko Haram and all organisations, all movements that wage war against books, against literacy, against education, enlightenment in any form have declared war, not on the state, but on humanity itself and in spite of such setbacks, in spite of such horrors we have the responsibility to support and to sustain efforts such as being made by Rainbow Club and allied societies and organisations around the World.
This recognition indicates very clearly that something, at least, is going right in Nigeria despite the avalanche of negativities.Professor Soyinka said.
Mind You, The English Above are really High and wierd, so get yourself a dictionary, after all, he's A PROFESSOR who has won one of the first ever Africa Nobel Price. RESPECT SIR
University Vice Chancellor Begs Feederal Government. Give Us Our Rightful TakeOff Grant, Nnamdi Azikwe
Egboka, who spoke when members of the senate committee on education
visited the university as part of her oversight function, had however
commended the national assembly for the support which they've given to
the university, adding that without such support, the university would
not have recorded such achievements within.
The university was taken over by the federal government in 1992 barely after one year it was established as a state university, but currently to date now, they has not received the takeoff grant which other federal universities has recieved.
The UNIZIK Vice Chancellor had said that despite cases made by the various past ministers of education in favour of the Nnamdi Azikwe University, the issue had remained unattended to by the federal Government.
He said that even when monies which were allocated to the university over the years were not fully released, adding that the only year it received full allocation was in 2008.
And according to him, only 47.75% of the allocation to the tertiary institution for 2012 had been released, while only N28.26 million out of N99.32 million appropriated for the over head cost for this year had been released to the tertiary institution. In his speech, the chairman of the senate committee on education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije said that the senate would do whatever it could to assist Nnamdi Azikiwe University, adding that if there was any evidence that other universities which suffered the fate eventually got their takeoff grant, Unizik would also get their appropriately.
He further stated and thanked the vice chancellor for exhibiting transparency in the running of the university, noting that it explained the reason for the enormour success achieved in project execution in the institution.
In His Exact Words, he said: i really feel moved and challenged by what i've seen today when i moved round the university. I feel 10 feet tall as an Igboman because I saw what a good leadership can do.
I also saw what prudent management can do and the management of university is backed with sincerity and honesty.
He continued to say that this is the first institution he had been to that adopted a collective way of running a university where both the students and the management at all levels are fully involved.
He said that he is really impressed with the way in which UNIZIK is been governed and that he'll do every thing in his power to ensure that the tertiary institution gets her TakeOff grants

THE largest University of Phoenix to Shutter 115 Locations
The University of Phoenix, the nation’s largest for-profit university,
is closing 115 of its brick-and-mortar locations, including 25 main
campuses and 90 smaller satellite learning centers. The closings will
affect some 13,000 students, about 4 percent of its student body of
328,000.
It is also laying off about 800 employees out of a staff of 17,000,
according to Mark Brenner, senior vice president for communications at
the Apollo Group, which owns the university.
After the closings, which are to be completed next year, the University
of Phoenix will be left with a nationwide network of 112 locations and a
physical presence in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto
Rico.
Apollo stock closed Wednesday at $21.40, down $6.09, a 22 percent decline.
Enrollments at the University of Phoenix and in the for-profit sector
over all have been declining in the last two years, partly because of
growing competition from other online providers, including nonprofit and
public universities, and a steady drumroll of negative publicity about
the sector’s recruiting abuses, low graduation rates and high default
rates.
Late last month, Kaplan
Higher Education, a division of the Washington Post Company, announced
that it was closing nine of its campuses and consolidating four others
into nearby locations. The company did not give a reason, but in an
August filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission it disclosed
that an accrediting commission had warned that its campuses in
Baltimore, Indianapolis and Dayton could lose their accreditation — and
with it, eligibility for the federal student aid that makes up more than
80 percent of Kaplan’s revenues — for failure to meet student
achievement requirements.
As the negative publicity about for-profits mounted — including many
charges that the schools enrolled students who had almost no chance of
succeeding, to get their federal student aid — both Kaplan and the
University of Phoenix announced new programs, offering some form of free
trial, to ensure that they enrolled only students who had a reasonable
likelihood of success. Those programs cut substantially into their
enrollment numbers.
“We’ve said publicly that about 20 percent of the students in our free
three-week online orientation program either don’t complete the program
or don’t enroll,” said Mr. Brenner.
To help boost enrollment, the University of Phoenix last week announced a
tuition freeze for students who remain consistently enrolled.
Students affected by the University of Phoenix closings will have the
option of transferring to the university’s online classes — about
three-quarters of its students are online — or moving to a nearby site.
Students are now being notified of the changes, and a hot line has been
set up at (866) 992-3302 for those with questions.

School Proprietor Sentence To 5 year Jail For Impersonation And Forgery
we here by inform the general public that The National Universities Commission {NUC} has just recorded a major
feat in her fight against illegal universities as Mr. Francis John Agbo,
the proprietor of an illegal Middle Belt University and North Central
University who has also claimed to be the Director of Research and
Innovation of the Commission, was convicted on a two-count charge of
impersonation and forgery and sentenced to five and a half years in
prison, and what's really beautiful was that the court sentence him
without an option of fine, the judge, Honourable Ali Tari Changbo of the
Upper Area Court, Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The fake academic, claimed that he is a senior academic staff of the Nasarawa State University, Lafia, which he has been using for years to defraud unsuspecting admission-seeking students of the public.
The evidence which was tendered before the court by the Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. Aaron Zamani, who is a legal officer in the National Universities Commission, also included fake admission letters, which this man has printed and fliers advertising the Nasarawa State University, Lafia, the convict went further to print out testimonies of witnesses, some of them victims, the accused claim of being the co-ordinator of the University Nyanya Study Centre, as hundreds of tellers of Unity Bank as well as Aso Savings and Loans, Oturkpo, which bore his name and that of his wife.
During the proceedings, a total of 12 exhibits were tendered and admitted by the trial court before the judge. The accused had earlier jumped bail which was granted to him during similar trials on related charges in an Abuja High Court and Chief Magistrate Court, Oturkpo, following which bench warrants were issued against him. The Convict had been at large until his recent arrest for the current trial which had graciously open up his well of fraudulent activities.
In his judgement, the Presiding Magistrate of the court where the convict is, said that the evidence was glaring, especially those of the victims including Peter Blessing, among others, who met the accused at different locations like Nyanya Primary School, as Mr. Agbo had no known permanent residing area.
Mr Agbo, the Convict had also failed to tender receipts to the victims for payments which were made to him which ranged from N8, 500 to N45,000 for admission forms and school fees. The evidence against Mr Agbo also revealed that more than N100,000 was extorted from four victims who testified against him before the court and Judge.
Delivering the judgment, the Magistrate Of The Court, Changbo said, from the evidence before it, the Management of the Nasarawa State University neither had any relationship with the culprit nor any satellite campus in Nyanya Primary School as alleged by the accused.
The Magistrate also ruled that the evidence also showed that the culprit deliberately forged the admission letters and purported to be a senior staff of Nassawara university, which had helped him to extort money from members of the public without offering them admission.
The Magistrate pointed out that the action of the culprit evidently occasioned emotional, psychological and economic hardship to the victims, who were mostly poor victims and from poor backgrounds.
The Law court also found out that the accused as having contravened Sections 179, 324 and 364 of the Penal Code and thereby pronounced Mr. Francis Agbo guilty of forgery and cheating by impersonation. The Magistration sentenced Mr Agbo to three years in prison for Forgery and two years for cheating, which bring the total sentence to five years without an option of fine.
why should they even fine him? He'll still use the Students Money to bail out himself. The Magistration also ruled that the convict pay back the money dubiously collected from the victims or else spend an additional six months in prison. The five-year sentence would run concurrently with effect from 23 February, 2012, when the convict was first arraigned. Reacting to the judgment, the Deputy Director, Legal, National Universities Commission, Mr. Moses Awe, described the judgment as a victory for the National Universities Commission, as it will serve as a lesson to other proprietors of illegal outfits who are in the habit of defrauding the public of their hard earn money.
He called on members of the public to always cooperate with the Commission in reporting any illegal outfit and advised prospective candidates to visit the National Universities Commission official portal for the list of approved universities and every thing they're suppose to know regarding the university of their choice.
Mr. Zamani, who expressed satisfaction with the ruling, said the convict was really notorious fraudster, who had feasted on the innocence of the public and deserved the sentence. The Counsel to the Nasarawa State University, Lafia, Mr Danjuma Shigaba, said the University was also satisfied with the ruling as it underscored the efficacy of the judiciary.
It will be recalled that the convict, Mr. Agbo, who hails from Ugbokolo Community of Benue State, had, in 2009, forged the letter head and identity card of NUC, for the running of the illegal Middle Belt and North Central University, Oturkpo, Benue State and was arrested and prosecuted by the National Universities Commission at the Chief Magistrate Court, Oturkpo, Benue State, between 2008 and 2009 for his action. Mr Agbo was also involved and prosecuted by the EFCC at the Abuja High Court.
However, an Upper Area Court in Keffi, Nasarawa State, had on Wednesday, sentenced John Francis, to five and half years imprisonment for impersonation, forgery and cheating. The judge, Ali Changbo, sentenced Francis to three years for forgery, two years for cheating and impersonation and six months for cheating. The Judge, Ali Changbo, who ordered that the prison term was with effect from February, 23rd, 2012, said the convict had 30 days to appeal. The Judge also ordered the convict to pay compensation to each of the victims as contained in the charges against him. Prosecutor Philemon Yusuf told the court that Habila Otoso, attached to Nasarawa State University, reported the case on February 21st 2012.
Yusuf said that the convict had impersonated as a staff of the NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY,which is located in Keffi and he had sold fake admission forms and issued admission letters to prospective students. He added that the offence was contrary to Sections 179, 364 and 324 of the Penal Code.
The counsel to the National Universities Commission, Mr Aaron Zamani, told the court that the convict also claimed to be a Director of Research in the National Universiges Commission. He went further to explain that Francis operated an illegal institution called, Middle Belt University in Otupko, Mr Zamani added that the the fake Proprietor had jumped bail in previous cases at the Chief Magistrate Court, Otukpo and Gudu High Court in Abuja for similar offences.

Aluu 4 Update: I Stood Helplessly As I Watch My Brother Being Killed!
the story you're about to read can help us know why it’s difficultand hard to stop an angry mob bent of carrying out their execution. It’s crazy, and you've got to believe me, because reading this I can definitely believe how she must’ve been helpless in trying to explain things to them, explaining and shouting on top of her voices to a crowd of More than Three Thousand People who are bent on seeing blood and heads rolling.
Apparently, the police was there when this happened also, which is also in line with Mrs Baringa’s story. It is very sad when human life can’t even be protected by the police, people whom pledge to guard and protect. So what the main reason of having the police there in ALUU community? One thing i know for sure is that not all POLICE FORCE in Nigeria could stand by and watch how innocent people were roasted like rats!.
pics of tekena sister, tekena sister picture,
Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, who is elder sister of Tekena Friday Elkanah, revealed few days ago, that policemen visited the scene where the students were burnt to death after they were severely injured and that one of the law enforcement agents told the perpetrators of the dastardly act to actually burn the four UNIPORT students alive.
Seriously, i think that that policeman who vomit that word should be line up with the killers, some people are not just worth to be in the NIGERIA POLICE FORCE. {NPF}
The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all students of the UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT, were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone.
Ibisobia, a part-time final year student of Marketing, at the same university who witnessed the incident, said on that fateful day, at about 7.30 am, she was at the house of her girl friend in ALUU community, when suddenly, she heard people shouting outside and phe noticed crowd passing by.
Like every normal human being, she was curious about what's going on outside, so she dashed out and beckoned on her friend to come since she lived in the area and know places.
She Narrated her story like this:
The thing attracted much noise and attention. So i went there but did not actually see or recognize any of them, due to the crowd and people surrounding them. I heard when people were saying the people they {vigilance group} caught were strangers, that they are going to burn them in the Burrow Pit.
They said they were asking them questions, so that they could know their senders. She also narrated that after that, she went back to her friend’s house, but could not stay there. So immediately, she went back again. This time around, she went through the bush path so that she could see the people whom the community wants to burn in the BURROW PIT properly. She started jumping to see if she could see them, but all to on avail.
She said that she jumped again but saw nothing. So i jumped the second time and I saw Tekena. Tekena happened to be my brother. I told myself that I was not seeing well, this thing is a lie. I jumped the third time, I saw Lloyd {one of the victims.} So, I started shouting for help.
From what i gathered, the first time i came, they said they were not known, that they were strangers. But i identified them, so i started shouting. Ibisobia said she continued shouting that Tekena was her brother, saying that he came to her on Thursday in school and she gave him his school fees. I told them that somebody should allow me to ask him what happened and what he came to do, that Tekena would confide in me. Tekena was wailing and in a pool of blood, i hardly recognised him myself.
Tekena has been my younger brother for many years. I saw them {Tekena and his three other friends} as they lay in the water naked with leaves covering their nakedness. His elder sister said she struggled and entered the crowd. Somebody shouted:
Who is that?
What is she doing inside?
People were pushing me and I started crying. I was shouting, that He is my brother!.
He is not a thief! Somebody behind me said: O’girl run for your life.
About two persons turned and asked, are you sure he is your brother, and they said may be i was the person that sent him to go and steal. Ibisobia replied them that how could she send him, that she did not look as such. They said I should run for my life or else? that i would be the next one, that is since they are four, i'll be the fifth person.
The young lady lamented that before she could get to her friend’s room to call her family members, she learnt that the mob had taken them to the burrow pit, where they will beat them to coma and burn them alive.
So, she went there again, inside the mob.
She also said that she called her family and they started coming.
However, before her family members arrived at the scene, a police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them {the ALUU youths}.
The people kept quiet as police were making statements. Suddenly, i heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. Police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said to the mob, burn them alive.
I must confess, i was suddenly gripped with fear of what the mob will do to my brother and his friends.
I had the intention to talk to the man that said they should be burnt alive. As soon as they {police} drove off, i saw the flames.
I was thinking they burnt them after they had killed them. Later, I discovered that they were burnt while they were still alive.
That is still the worst day of my life, which i won't forget in a hurry. I saw my blood brother die in front of me.
God have Mercy, after going thruigh some people's comment on our FACEBOOK FANPAGE, i was just plainly crazy, what are certain people talking that the Government is to be blame? That the people of Aluu Fends for themselves? That if the Government had tried and stop stealing and other things in the Country, that this four uniport students wouldn't have been killed.
I Couldn't even replied them back.
now in all this is that how we can help ourself and this country grow this is vary hard to say well may God help us all.

UNIABUJA Big Girl Dies Vomiting Blood After Buying N8 Million Car
University of Abuja
student, Sonia Okeke who reportedly died in a
mysterious circumstance recently.
Sources say the Awka- Anambra State born
pretty damsel was one of the campus big babe
with connections with the movers and shakers
of the nation’s seat of power. Sonia is said to be
a generous person and even sponsors some
ladies through school.
Trouble started shortly after Sonia bought a
state of the art wonder-on-wheels for N8
million as people started noticing she was no
longer her bubbly self and was growing lean
by the day. “It got so bad that she was advised
to go to the hospital for check-up, but she
refused saying she was fine and just needed
some rest.
But one night, she was coughing badly and was
vomiting blood. She was rushed to the hospital
but it was too late for the doctors to revive her
having waited that long before seeking medical
attention,” said a source.
Now the police are said to be investigating
whether there is a sinister move behind her
death, and request that her friends should
come forward with names of her boy or men
friends.
A warning to all girls who go to campus to live
reckless life. Stay back, it doesn't pay after all!
May her soul rest in peace.

4 student in UINIPORT beaten todeath for allegedly stealing phones, laptops
to announce that four(4) students of the
University of Port Harcourt identified as
Ugonna, Ilyod, Tekana and Chidiaka were
yesterday morning beaten to death by
indegenes of Aluu community for allegedly
stealing phones and laptops in an off campus
hostel. What a horrific, callous, inhumane,
wicked youths at Aluu!!!
Though no one is a fan to stealing (or any other
bad thing) but then, it is quiet disheartening
how some Nigerians have learnt to take laws
into their hands in taking lives they cannot
create. Even Christ said it, "let he without sin
cast the first stone".
It is one good thing to arrest a thief, but very
bad and unacceptable to kill the thief without
judgement. Who is even sure these boys were
the actual thieves behind the loss of the
phones and laptops?
Information reaching Myschool® said the
killed students (all in their early 20's) were
brutally beaten until they all gave up the
ghosts, God have mercy!
Nigerians let's say no to bad thing! May their
souls rest in peace.
A minute silence for them please!!!

JAMB To Use PPT, DBT and CBT for2013 UTME
In ever year hundreds of thousands of students
sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) to gain entrance into
Nigerian universities. The large number of
candidates coupled with other logistics
problems often makes conducting the exams
quite a headache for the examination officials
and the candidates.
Sometimes, problems are experienced in the
areas of insufficient materials which often lead
to missing scripts or missing results.
However, to curb this, the Registrar of the Joint
Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),
Prof. Dibu Ojerinde announced yesterday that
three options would be introduced for the 2013
UTME.
Paper and Pencil Testing (PPT), Dibu Based Test
(DBT), where questions would be presented on
computers and answers would be on paper and
Computer Based Testing (CBT) where both
questions and answers would be done on
computer.
Mr Ojerinde stated that candidates were at
liberty to choose one of the three options in the
2013 UTME.
According to him, candidates who chose the
CBT option would get their scores a few
minutes after writing the examination on their
mobile phones.
“The internet age has come to stay with us
hence as actors in the new age, you cannot
afford to stay on the fence, you must be
prepared to join the train or else you are left
behind,” he told Daily Times.
